Worth understanding what red actually does. Red is the first wavelength the water absorbs and is essentially gone by 15–20 feet, so a red skirt down deep is not red any more — it reads as a dark grey or black silhouette. That is not a flaw. It is exactly why black/red is a proven wahoo combination.

When to run multi red

• Water: Any — it earns its place deep and in low light
• Light: Overcast, early and late
• Species: Wahoo; also a dark option for marlin

At 12–16 knots a fish gets a fraction of a second to decide, so run it where flash and contrast matter more than detail.

Why the 12" length

The big-profile length. Marlin, larger yellowfin and bluefin, big chuggers and plungers, and long-rigger positions where the lure has to be visible from a distance. Also the length to reach for when you are dressing a teaser rather than a hook bait.

The most common colour mistake is not picking the wrong one — it is picking one and running five of it. A spread is a test: every position is a question you are asking the ocean.
